Our Organic and Regenerative Cotton

An age-old fiber, rediscovered in Puglia with respect for the land

Cotton (from the Arabic qutn) is the short, soft, fluffy fiber that wraps around the seeds of plants in the Gossypium genus. We grow it in the province of Foggia using the regenerative organic method, ROC™ certified, to bring quality, ethics and memory back to a crop that has run through the history of the Tavoliere plain.

The Origins of Cotton

A plant that has accompanied humankind for millennia, domesticated independently in the Old and New Worlds, which today we grow again with the same care as then.

Botany

From Tropical Shrub to the Boll We Know

Cotton belongs to the genus Gossypium, in the Malvaceae family: a shrub native to tropical and subtropical regions around the world, from the Americas to Africa and India. It is a perennial plant, but in modern farming systems — including ours — it is grown as an annual, partly because of its poor frost tolerance.

Today the plants reach about 1.20 m in height; in traditional perennial farming systems, now largely disappeared, they could exceed 2 meters.

7th–6th millennium BC
Nanchoc, Peru

The presence of Gossypium barbadense has been identified at a site in the Nanchoc district, Peru, evidencing the prehistoric use of cotton in the New World.

6th millennium BC
Mehrgarh, Pakistan

At Mehrgarh, in the Kachi district, fragments of a cotton thread used to string together a necklace of eight copper beads were found: among the earliest evidence of weaving in the world.

Why Our Cotton Is Special

As well as being one of the first businesses to produce cotton in Italy, we are also the only company certified ROC™.

Until the arrival of synthetic fibers in the 1960s, cotton was a crop typical of the landscape and history of Puglia, particularly of the province of Foggia. Today we are rediscovering it, combining traditional practices with the latest technical and scientific innovations, to obtain a high-quality final product that meets the highest environmental, ethical and production standards.

Regenerative organic farming is based on practices capable of rebuilding the soil's organic matter, improving its water retention capacity, increasing biodiversity and sequestering carbon. The ROC™ Italia certification also guarantees social fairness, through fair working conditions and pay for the people who work on certified farms.

Our Regenerative Method

Three practices, one goal: giving fertility and life back to the land that feeds us, one hectare at a time.

🌍

Soil Care

We have done away with more aggressive practices such as ploughing, preferring minimum-tillage techniques that avoid turning over the soil, preserve its structure, reduce erosion of the fertile layer and limit fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions.

🐄

Natural Manuring

On our plots we spread quintals of well-matured cow manure sourced from local organic farms: a valuable input of organic matter and beneficial bacteria, which makes nutrients available and improves the soil's structure and water retention.

🔄

Crop Rotation

We alternate depleting crops (durum wheat), renewal crops (tomato, cotton) and nitrogen-fixing crops (legumes), to limit allelopathic risk, increase soil fertility and improve its structure.

The Cotton Cycle

From Green Manure to Flowering

A Feast for Pollinators

Our regenerative organic cotton is always preceded by around 90 days of leguminous green manure, which is then chopped and worked into the soil.

The soil is then prepared with minimum tillage and, around mid-May, the seeds are planted. In July comes the spectacular flowering: the field fills with pink and white blooms, a true feast for pollinators.
